Does Sudan have pyramids?

Yes — Sudan holds more royal pyramids than anywhere else on earth. The royal necropolises at Meroë alone contain more than 200 graves, many marked by steep-sided Kushite pyramids. UNESCO inscribed the Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe as World Heritage in 2011 (ref 1336).

Where do the Blue Nile and White Nile meet?

At al-Mogran in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. The two rivers run side by side in one bed for roughly a kilometre — the Blue Nile dark with highland silt, the White Nile pale — before becoming the single Nile that flows north through Nubia.

What is the Meroitic script?

A writing system of 23 signs invented around 300 BC in the Kingdom of Kush, and one of the earliest writing systems in sub-Saharan Africa. It was written right to left in both hieroglyphic and cursive forms. F. Ll. Griffith established its phonetic values in 1909, but the Meroitic language itself remains largely not understood for lack of a bilingual key.

What is Sudanese food like?

Sorghum-based and communal. Kisra — a paper-thin fermented sorghum flatbread — is torn to scoop mullah stews. Ful medames, fava beans mashed with sesame oil and cumin, is the national breakfast. Sheya is charcoal-grilled lamb salted only. Jebena coffee is roasted to order, spiced with cardamom, and poured in three rounds. Food is shared from one tray and taken with the right hand.

How many states does Sudan have?

Eighteen. They are grouped as the Northern region (Northern State, River Nile), the East (Red Sea, Kassala, Al Qadarif), the Centre (Khartoum, Al Gezira), the West or Darfur (North, South, West, East and Central Darfur), and Kordofan with the greater south (North, South and West Kordofan, Blue Nile, White Nile, Sennar).

Can tourists visit Sudan now?

Sudan has been in armed conflict since April 2023 and much of the country is not currently safe for travel. Khartoum International Airport has been closed to civil traffic since then; Port Sudan New International is the principal working gateway. Anyone considering travel must consult their own government's travel advisory and the Sudanese authorities directly.
